If you have friends or family in Euclid, you'll hear about this one. Issue 5, the school district's new operating levy, failed by just 61 votes, with 50.2% voting against, according to unofficial Cuyahoga County Board of Elections results.
Superintendent Karen Brown had warned of a $14 million deficit. She said a failed levy would mean cuts to state education minimums, including transportation, electives and activities. The district will share reductions after administrators and the school board meet. Brown wrote, "Nothing changes in our classrooms today."
- Issue 5: new 6.75-mill continuing levy for current expenses
- Passed: Cleveland Heights-University Heights, Orange and Strongsville levies
- Failed: Garfield Heights renewal, with 53.8% against
- Passed: Independence renewal, with 60.63% in favor
A margin under 0.5% on a taxing district issue must be recounted under state rules. The election board's official canvass is due by Nov. 24.
Euclid's failed levy would have cost a bit more per $100,000 home

|---|---|---|
