Mentor Schools' levy is narrowly passing in unofficial results

Mentor's Issue 5 would cost $246 a year on a $200,000 home

If you live in the Mentor Schools district, is ahead. Tuesday's early count had the five-year levy leading by 17 votes, before any of Lake County's 163 Election Day precincts had reported. WYSO Public Radio reports it narrowly passing. School Board President Maggie Cook said the smaller ask than the last attempt helped. Voters rejected larger requests in 2023 and last May.

  • Early count: 50.07% yes, 49.93% no, unofficial
  • Cost: about $123 a year per $100,000 in property value
  • Passage averts cuts to dozens of positions, school leaders said

Around Lake and Geauga counties, Painesville voters approved Issue 6, a continuing 1.25% expected to bring in about $3.4 million a year. Willoughby-Eastlake, Riverside and Berkshire voters rejected similar taxes. Willoughby-Eastlake's plan now calls for one high school and one middle school beginning in 2028-29.

Morton Salt's Fairport Harbor mine has been shut since an Oct. 22 water breach

Morton Salt stopped underground work at its Fairport Harbor mine after discovering a water breach Oct. 22. Everyone was evacuated, and no one was hurt. Cleveland.com reports that the company hasn't said publicly where the water came from, how fast it's coming in or whether it can be controlled.

The mine opened in 1959.

  • ODNR: no immediate threat to Lake Erie or drinking water
  • Lead agency: the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration
  • State water or air monitors: none deployed
  • Painesville: extra water testing, solely as a precaution

Mike Cook, Painesville's public information officer, told WEWS the city's water superintendent is doing the extra testing. A spokesman for Gov. Mike DeWine said the federal agency is leading because the shutdown is being treated as a worker safety issue. Morton said surface activity at the site will be severely limited while the mine is closed, and it gave no timetable for a return underground.

Salt buyers

Northeast Ohio public agencies buying Morton Salt through the state's winter contract can seek extra costs from qualifying late deliveries, including substitute salt, extra trucking, moving salt between facilities and staff overtime. Recovery isn't automatic, because Morton has described the Fairport Harbor shutdown as a event. Cleveland.com
